Beginner’s Guide To Adjusting A Laser Cutting Machine: Remember These 7 Parameters

Are you new to laser cutting? Don’t panic! While many settings can be left alone, these 7 core parameters are critical for quality, speed, and cost. Wrong settings can ruin your material.

1. Speed: Controls Cutting Speed

  • Too fast: Won’t cut through, rough edges.

  • Too slow: Burns material, low efficiency.

  • Small holes or curves: Reduce speed to prevent overburn.

2. Height: Controls Stability

  • Closer: More stable but risk of collision.

  • Farther: Safer but less stable.

  • Thick plates: Raise focal height to avoid lens contamination.

3. Gas: Controls Cutting Effect

  • Air: Best for thin plates, low cost.

  • Oxygen: Best for thick plates, aids combustion.

  • Nitrogen: Best for stainless steel, prevents oxidation.

  • Wrong gas: Can ruin the plate immediately.

4. Air Pressure: Controls Slag Removal

  • Higher pressure: Cleaner slag removal, smoother cut.

  • Thick plates: Need higher pressure for efficient slag removal.

5. Power: Controls Cutting Depth

  • Thick plates: Increase power for deeper penetration.

  • Thin plates: Reduce power to prevent burn-through.

  • Idle moves (air cutting): Lower power to save energy.

6. Idle Power: Controls Precision

  • Higher energy: Deeper cuts but rougher edges.

  • Lower energy: Finer cuts, ideal for thin plates or small parts.

7. Frequency: Controls Line Width

  • High frequency: Best for thin plates, narrower kerf.

  • Low frequency: Best for thick plates, wider kerf.

  • 5000 Hz: 5000 pulses per second, balancing speed and quality.

Remember: Don’t turn knobs randomly! Focus on these 7 parameters first, then fine-tune. Your cuts will improve instantly.
